Identification of potential hydropower plant sites with consideration of ecological, economic and technical factors.

Identification of possible new hydropower plant sites

Based on the study on the theoretical hydroelectric potential in Switzerland, potential sites for hydropower plants with a capacity ≥ 1 MW have been identified with GIS-based optimization methods. To identify potential new power plant sites that have a greater chance of being realized, beside hydromorphological indicators such as discharge, slope and river length also numerous ecological, economic and technical factors where considered. Power plant sites witch matched one of the following criteria where not further considered:

  • location in a national protected areas (wetlands, low and highmoor, amphibians)
  • the power plant site is on a natural or near-natural river reach
  • the river reach is already used by a hydroelectric plant

In a second step, the remaining potential sites have been prioritized according to the following criteria:

  1. The power plant should not be located in cantonal protected areas
  2. The river reach should be as short as possible.
  3. The power plant should not be located in urban area.

The results are presented as:

  • a summary table with details of the hydrological characteristics and the limiting factors. The sites are sorted by priority.
  • a site map with the main parameters for each hydropower plant
  • a Kmz file for the correct position of the sites in Google Earth.
